چکیده

The world (both natural and man-made) is constrained by physical laws to a finite number of basic patterns. Certain three dimensional relationships between features in a scene give rise to two dimensional relationships that are relatively viewpoint invariant and can be distinguished as non-accidental. Thus, those regularities observable in the image arise not by accident, but are projections of real regularities in the scene. The Gestalt movement proposed that the human visual system applied the principles of perceptual organisation to group image features manifesting those regularities. These were used to recover three dimensional structure from two dimensional views, providing cues to models for scene interpretation.

Imagining circles – Empirical data and a perceptual model for the arc-size illusion

An essential part of visual object recognition is the evaluation of the curvature of both an object's outline as well as the contours on its surface. We studied a striking illusion of visual curvature--the arc-size illusion (ASI)--to gain insight into the visual coding of curvature. In the ASI, short arcs are perceived as flatter (less curved) compared to longer arcs of the same radius. We inve...

Extracting surfaces of revolution by perceptual grouping of ellipses

Ellipses seen in an image may be the 2 0 projection of 3 0 circles from the scene. Given this assumption, ellipses can be grouped into perceptual groups from which inferences about the 3 0 structure of objects can be made. In this paper methods are proposed for extracting groupings corresponding to surfaces of revolution. A Hough transform approach is used for grouping, after which the confiden...

Labeling of curvilinear structure across scales by token grouping

This paper presents an algorithm for labeling curvilinear structure at multiple scales in line drawings and edge images Symbolic CURVE-ELEMENT tokens residing in a spatially-indexed and scale-indexed data structure denote circular arcs fit to image data. Tokens are computed via a small-to-large scale grouping procedure employing a “greedy”, best-first, strategy for choosing the support of new t...

Ellipse Detection through Decomposition of Circular Arcs and Line Segments

In this work we propose an efficient and original method for ellipse detection which relies on a recent contour representation based on arcs and line segments [1]. The first step of such a detection is to locate ellipse candidate with a grouping process exploiting geometric properties of adjacent arcs and lines. Then, for each ellipse candidate we extract a compact and significant representatio...

Closed Space Curves of Constant Curvature Consisting of Arcs of Circular Helices

A closed κ0-curve is a closed regular curve of class C r (r ≥ 2) in the Euclidean 3-space having constant curvature κ0 > 0. We present various examples of nonplanar closed κ0-curves of class C , which are composed of n arcs of circular helices. The construction of c starts from the spherical image (= tangent indicatrix) c of c, which then has to be a closed regular curve of class C on the unit ...
